Virtualization with Proxmox

Broadcom changed the rules — and many IT departments are facing a question: keep paying or switch? As a certified Proxmox Silver Partner, we plan and guide your migration. Clean, secure, and without production downtime.

What’s changed since the Broadcom acquisition

Since Broadcom acquired VMware, many organizations are facing a new reality:

  • Dramatically increased licensing costs — sometimes doubling or tripling from one year to the next.
  • Forced bundling — you have to license products you don’t even use.
  • Uncertainty about the future — will your edition still exist next year? And what will it cost?
  • Discontinuation of smaller editions — Essentials and smaller bundles are gone. This hits mid-sized organizations especially hard.

At the same time, the reality is clear: VMs need to run, data needs to be safe, and operations can’t stop. The question isn’t whether you react — it’s how.

That’s exactly where Proxmox comes in.

Proxmox VE — Enterprise virtualization without the licensing trap

Proxmox Virtual Environment is an open-source virtualization platform that combines KVM and LXC. Sounds technical — in practice, it means you can virtualize everything you currently run under VMware. No per-CPU licensing, no forced bundles, no surprises at renewal time.

  • Full virtualization with KVM — Windows, Linux, BSD, everything you need.
  • Lightweight containers with LXC — for services that don’t need a full VM.
  • Integrated Ceph storage — highly available, scalable storage built right into Proxmox, without external SAN or expensive storage licenses.
  • High availability & live migration — VMs move between nodes with zero downtime.
  • Web-based management — no vCenter, no additional management server. Everything through the browser.
  • Open source with enterprise support — Proxmox offers commercial support subscriptions for production environments. We provide the right tier for your setup.

Proxmox Backup Server — The smart Veeam alternative

Many of our clients use Veeam for backups. And for certain workloads, that still makes sense — we specifically back up Active Directory, Exchange, and SQL databases with the Veeam agent.

For everything else, we recommend Proxmox Backup Server.

Why? Because PBS works natively with Proxmox VE, backs up efficiently, and costs a fraction of the price.

  • Incremental backups with deduplication — fast, space-efficient, reliable.
  • Encryption and integrity verification — your backups are safe, even on external media.
  • Seamless integration with Proxmox VE — backup jobs configured directly from the VE interface, no additional software needed.
  • No per-socket or per-VM licensing — back up whatever you want without counting licenses.

Our recommendation: Hybrid backup strategy

Proxmox Backup Server for VMs, containers, and Linux workloads. Veeam agent for Active Directory, Exchange, and SQL. This way you get the best of both worlds — without paying for a full Veeam package.

Managed Offsite Backup — 3-2-1 without your own infrastructure

Most people know the 3-2-1 rule. Few actually implement it, because a second location means effort.

We offer Managed PBS in our own data centers: Your backups are encrypted and replicated to our infrastructure. You get a complete offsite backup without having to operate your own hardware at a secondary site.

From VMware to Proxmox — how a migration works

A migration is not an experiment. It’s a project with a clear plan, defined risks, and an outcome that needs to be better than before. Here’s how we approach it:

1. Analysis & Planning

We inventory your current VMware environment: which VMs are running, what resources do they need, what dependencies exist? From this, we create a migration plan with timeline and risk assessment.

2. Hardware Design

Proxmox places different demands on storage and networking than VMware. We size the new environment to fit — whether Ceph on the Proxmox nodes, traditional NFS/iSCSI, or a combination.

3. Migration

VMs are converted and transferred. Critical systems migrate in maintenance windows, non-critical ones during normal operations. No big bang — step by step.

4. Backup & Monitoring

Proxmox Backup Server is set up, monitoring configured, documentation created. At the end, you have an environment that you — or we — can operate cleanly.

5. Operations (optional)

As with all our solutions: you decide how much you want to hand off. Full control with occasional support, or fully managed by us.

Why Proxmox from Nexilon?

  • Certified Proxmox Silver Partner — with the goal of reaching Gold. Not just a partner logo, but verified expertise.
  • Experience with complex deployments — multi-node clusters with Ceph, 400G backbone, EVPN fabrics, multi-site distribution. Not just lab, but production.
  • Hybrid backup strategy — we combine PBS and Veeam where it makes sense, instead of dogmatically recommending just one tool.
  • Managed Offsite Backup — 3-2-1 without second-site infrastructure, in our data center.
  • Dedicated contact person — a small team that knows your environment. Reachable outside normal business hours.
  • 12+ years of IT experience — from networking to security to virtualization. We see the full picture, not just the hypervisor.
  • Found through the Proxmox partner directory — clients find us there and choose us for competence and technical depth.

Who we deploy Proxmox for

  • Organizations that want to move away from VMware — whether because of cost, uncertainty, or principle.
  • IT departments that want to embrace open source but need enterprise-grade reliability.
  • Municipalities, utilities, and public-sector organizations that want to reduce licensing costs and strengthen digital sovereignty.
  • Schools and educational institutions that need powerful virtualization without blowing the budget.
  • Organizations looking for a solid backup strategy — including offsite, without their own hardware at a secondary location.

From the field

Municipal utility

High-performance cluster

7-node Proxmox cluster with Ceph storage and 400G backbone, distributed across three locations. Replacement of VMware with Fibre Channel. Significantly higher performance, full high availability, zero virtualization licensing costs.

Municipality

Separate clusters for administration and school

Two separate 3-node Proxmox clusters — one for the municipal administration, one for the educational environment. Currently being upgraded to 200G backend with EVPN fabric and Juniper switches.

Education

10+ hypervisors, moving away from VMware

An educational institution with over 10 existing VMware hypervisors — found us through the official Proxmox partner directory. Full migration to Proxmox VE in planning.
